first_img Hut 8 won the bid for two data centers in Texas from Poolin for 140 million USD

According to court documents, the Bitcoin mining company Hut 8 has made a bid of $140 million to become the winning bidder for the two data center sites of the bankrupt mining company Poolin located in Texas. The bid includes cash and other considerations, covering Poolin's Pyote and Tarbush sites. The transaction must be approved by the bankruptcy court in New Jersey before it can be completed, with a sale hearing scheduled for September 29.Hut 8's bid is nearly three times the initial bid of $52 million from Thor CALAP, which offered $15 million for the Pyote site and $37 million for the Tarbush site. Additionally, DigiPower X bid $36.5 million for Pyote, while Pecos Industrial Development, designated by the AI infrastructure company Fluidstack, bid $100.5 million for Tarbush. Poolin and its two U.S. affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July after shutting down mining and hosting operations at the Texas sites. Court documents indicate that its debts amount to approximately $173.1 million, of which about $163.7 million are unsecured promissory notes owed to Poolin Wallet users after withdrawals were frozen in 2022.This acquisition will further expand Hut 8's data center footprint. The former Bitcoin mining company is deeply investing in AI infrastructure, with its second-quarter financial report released in August showing a development pipeline of approximately 8.7 gigawatts, an increase of about 300 megawatts quarter-over-quarter.

first_img Hut 8 co-founder warns that AI may trigger systemic financial and infrastructure shocks

According to CoinDesk, Hut 8 co-founder Marc van der Chijs warned in an interview with CoinDesk that the fierce competition between enterprises and nations is accelerating the development of artificial intelligence, with its speed exceeding human control, potentially posing systemic risks to the financial system and critical infrastructure. He stated, "We have already lost control," and expressed concern that systemic disruption or catastrophic failure is almost inevitable before real international safeguards are established.Van der Chijs predicts that AI and robotics could ultimately replace 90% to 95% of existing jobs and significantly lower the costs of goods and services. At that point, governments will need to find new sources of revenue, such as taxing the use of robots or AI. He also believes that AI could expose vulnerabilities in traditional banking software, threatening the confidence of institutions that rely on interconnected systems; in the crypto space, businesses built around Bitcoin, such as exchanges, are more susceptible to impact than the underlying network itself.Van der Chijs previously sold a large amount of Bitcoin to shift towards AI investments and believes that the capital shift by investors towards AI has prevented Bitcoin from reaching the previously expected levels of $200,000 to $250,000. He is now reinvesting some of the AI profits back into crypto assets through exchange-traded funds. He still views Bitcoin as the only asset worth holding in his lifetime and claims that Hut 8's shift to AI data centers is "the best decision ever."

first_img Kevin Bass: Anthropic builds an unshuttable regulatory capture machine, calling for a congressional investigation

User Kevin Bass posted that he has audited the finances of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic and found shocking circumstances, thus calling for Congress to investigate. Bass stated: Anthropic not only seeks regulatory capture but has also built an unshuttable regulatory capture machine, with structural financial incentives making it impossible to shut down its AI doomsday loop. This loop begins with METR, which Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed to be assessed for model risk by a third-party evaluation agency and suggested METR.Bass claimed that METR financially relies on Anthropic's success, particularly the explosive growth of Anthropic stock exceeding $7 billion. Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz invested this stock into Good Ventures Foundation, which constitutes the majority of the organization's portfolio, and GVF is the overwhelming funder of the entire Anthropic network ecosystem. This stock was worth $500 million earlier last year and is now valued at over $7.7 billion about 16 months later. METR cannot afford to interrupt this growth.Bass pointed out that the same organization funding METR also funds organizations promoting AI doomsday, such as the Tarbell Center, which has published articles in The Verge, Science, Los Angeles Times, and others. These organizations all rely on the same funding. Bass stated that METR and others are not independent of Anthropic and cannot provide independent assessments; Congress must investigate.

CoinEx founder Yang Haipo: Once considered selling, ultimately decided to shut down

Yang Haipo, the founder of CoinEx, stated that CoinEx officially launched on December 22, 2017, and will officially close on December 22, 2026, nine years later. He mentioned that nine years is a long time in the cryptocurrency industry, and CoinEx has gone through multiple bull and bear cycles with its users, witnessing the rise and fall of numerous projects, as well as seeing many peers leave the market in different ways.Yang Haipo expressed that after reflection, he accepted the fact that CoinEx has not become a leading exchange in the industry, and the security and compliance risks of operating a cryptocurrency exchange have become increasingly difficult to control; revenue may decline, but responsibility does not lessen, and bearing unlimited risks with limited revenue is no longer a rational choice. He stated that CoinEx has survived for nine years in a highly volatile and harsh industry, and after experiencing various storms, it can still leave completely and with dignity.Regarding CET, CoinEx will repurchase it at its initial listing price of 0.005 USDT per coin, with no quantity limit set. Yang Haipo mentioned that he seriously considered selling CoinEx but ultimately decided against it because users entrusted their assets to CoinEx based on their trust in the platform and him personally. He believes that handing over the platform and this trust to a new owner is not the right way to end this journey, stating, "A clean end is the right end." CoinEx will ensure that users can fully withdraw their assets, provide employees with a dignified farewell, and offer a clear and responsible handling plan for CET holders.

Harmony plans to shut down the mainnet and migrate ONE to Ethereum, shifting towards AI video remixing business

Harmony has released two proposals to comprehensively shut down the mainnet launched in 2019, migrate the native token ONE to Ethereum, and shift towards an AI video "mashup economy" business. The team stated that the threats posed by national-level attackers and AI entities are the reasons for proposing the network shutdown plan. The migration plan proposes to take a snapshot of user wallets, staking delegations, validator rewards, smart contracts, and tokens within centralized exchanges at the last block of the network, airdropping new ONE to the same wallet addresses on Ethereum, with holders not needing to actively claim; delegated stakes and unclaimed rewards will be airdropped to their respective governance vaults. The total supply of ONE and the issuance rate will remain unchanged, with newly issued tokens intended for the new business and feedback from governors being considered.Multi-signature wallets, liquidity pools, and on-chain applications cannot be migrated. The team urges users to exit all smart contracts by September 10, 2026, and plans to publicly disclose token contracts, snapshot calculations, and airdrop scripts for auditing. Validators can stop running nodes starting from September 10 at 22:00 Beijing time. The team plans to compensate for the difference in issuance rewards between node shutdown and the final block of the network, establishing a one-time compensation pool of $1.372 million, to be paid in four quarters to validators and their delegators who timely shut down, sign agreements, retain stakes, and serve as governors of the new project. The new business will open up prompts and materials for users to create secondary content, with AI entities expanding video stories, and will recruit operators responsible for video generation, distribution, and content review. Harmony plans to subsidize GPU hardware in the first year and promote demand for video generation, with operators required to stake tokens to earn rewards based on service online time. The team plans to help operators generate up to $1 million in total revenue in the first year, provided they meet staking and online rate requirements; promoters can initially earn a 30% ongoing commission from each $10 monthly subscription they recommend. Both proposals are non-binding and the plans may still be adjusted.
