Wintermute: Two major catalysts land, BTC breaks range to create an eight-month high

Wintermute released the market weekly report, stating that the Federal Reserve passed an interest rate hike of 25 basis points to 3.75-4% with a unanimous vote of 12-0 on September 21. Sixteen officials expect at least one more rate hike this year, and inflation is not expected to return to the 2% target before 2029.The two major catalysts that the market was focused on—the FOMC rate hike and the CLARITY Act—have both materialized: the CLARITY Act failed to pass in the Senate (49-50, not reaching the 60-vote threshold), and the SEC and CFTC immediately stated they would formulate cryptocurrency regulatory rules under existing authority. The market adjusted for only one trading day before recovering. BTC traded this week in the range of $75,000 to $81,000, with a weekly closing price of $81,159, marking the first time since last November that it has stood above the 50-week moving average; ETH rose 6.7%, trading in the range of $2,350 to $2,600.In terms of ETF funds, there was a net outflow of $746 million from Tuesday to Wednesday, followed by a return of $593 million from Thursday to Friday, resulting in a net outflow of about $6 million over five trading days, with the outflow triggered by CLARITY almost fully replenished within 48 hours. Entering this week, both BTC and ETH broke through the upper range before the U.S. stock market opened, accompanied by about $250 million in short liquidations, with BTC briefly reaching $86,000, a new eight-month high.

Bitget Research Institute: Dual Catalysts of Policy and Regulation Propel the Crypto Market into a New Turning Point

Yesterday, the cryptocurrency market experienced the strongest single-day performance of the year. Bitcoin reached a high of $70,000, marking the first time in two months; Ethereum peaked at $2,300; Solana rose by about 12%. The Bitget Research Institute analyzed that the core driving force behind this round of market activity comes from a dual breakthrough in policy and regulation: the White House convened a meeting with the president, executives from the cryptocurrency industry, and heads of the SEC and CFTC, marking the formal entry of digital assets into the national financial strategy discussion level; on the same day, the SEC proposed "Regulation Crypto Assets," establishing a clear channel for token financing and introducing the "investment contract safe harbor" mechanism for the first time, which is expected to promote the emergence of more U.S.-native projects. From a market structure perspective, when the first two catalysts were realized, the market was in a bearish position, and the price increase triggered a chain reaction of liquidations. On that day, 126,000 traders across the network had a total of $1.92 billion in positions liquidated, setting a record for the largest short liquidation day in history, further amplifying the price increase. The Bitget Research Institute believes that since a considerable proportion of this round of price increase comes from concentrated short liquidations rather than spot buying, there is a short-term pressure for market correction. However, from a medium to long-term perspective, the cryptocurrency market is迎来政策与流动性的双重转折点, with the clarification of regulatory pathways and the improvement of the long-end liquidity environment together forming the foundation for a new cycle.

Data: In August, Bitcoin may maintain a range of $58,000 to $67,000, with a breakthrough still requiring macroeconomic and capital catalysts

CryptoQuant analyst Axel Adler Jr. released the August Bitcoin market outlook, stating that BTC is currently down about 50% from the cycle high of $126,200 set in October 2025, with prices approaching the on-chain average holding cost. It is expected that August will likely maintain a volatile trend. The report suggests that the most probable scenario for August (with a probability of about 55%) is that BTC will trade in the range of $57,700 to $67,000, potentially closing at $60,000 to $64,000 by the end of the month. The bearish scenario (30% probability) involves a drop below $57,700, further testing the on-chain realized price of about $52,800; the bullish scenario (15% probability) requires a stable position above $67,000, along with continuous inflows of ETF funds, a decline in U.S. Treasury yields, and a weakening dollar, targeting $71,000 to $74,000. The current valuation is close to the on-chain cost area, and the spot Bitcoin ETF continues to see net inflows, providing support for the market; however, the high interest rate environment, sustained high U.S. Treasury yields, and a relatively strong dollar still limit the upside potential for risk assets. The report also reminds to pay attention to the impact of macro events such as U.S. non-farm employment, CPI, and the Jackson Hole central bank annual meeting on market liquidity.

Benchmark lowers Coinbase's performance expectations, the "CLARITY Act" may be an important catalyst for stock prices

Benchmark has lowered its second-quarter performance expectations for Coinbase ahead of the earnings report next week, citing weak trading activity in the cryptocurrency market, but still maintains a "Buy" rating and a target price of $270. Based on Coinbase's stock price of about $172 on Wednesday, this target price corresponds to an upside potential of approximately 57%.Benchmark analyst Mark Palmer has revised Coinbase's second-quarter revenue expectation from $1.51 billion to $1.38 billion and has lowered the full-year revenue expectation for 2026 from $6.33 billion to $6 billion. The trading volume on centralized exchanges in the second quarter has decreased by about 28%, and the total market capitalization of the cryptocurrency market has dropped by about 13%. The firm expects Coinbase's trading revenue to decline by more than 5%.However, the market showed initial signs of stabilization in June, with spot trading volume exceeding $1 trillion for the first time since March, which may somewhat alleviate the weak performance in the second quarter.Benchmark believes that if the CLARITY Act is ultimately passed, it could become a more significant catalyst for the stock price than quarterly performance, with Coinbase potentially being one of the main beneficiaries of the act. Trump has previously agreed to the relevant ethical provisions, removing a key obstacle to the advancement of the bill.

first_img CryptoQuant Founder: The strategy should suspend buying BTC, as current purchases resemble a liquidity black hole rather than a price catalyst

CryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju stated that the current Bitcoin purchasing behavior of Strategy resembles a "liquidity absorber" rather than an effective price catalyst. He pointed out that in the past two years, Bitcoin's market capitalization has increased by $467 billion, yet the price has actually dropped by 1%, indicating that the influx of large amounts of capital has merely resulted in a transfer of chips without driving up the price. In the current environment with obvious selling pressure, continuous buying by Strategy may only serve to maintain the range rather than truly drive an increase.Ki Young Ju suggested that Strategy pause Bitcoin purchases until cash reserves and dividend coverage capabilities are restored; establish a systematic, model-driven buying framework to avoid the market impression of "always buying at local highs"; and create a disciplined selling mechanism in the next bull market to reduce leverage and realize shareholder value by partially taking profits at highs, while accumulating reserves of "dry powder" for future lows.He believes that this cycle is different from previous ones, as Bitcoin has been in a sideways trend for nearly two years, neither forming a strong bull market nor experiencing sufficient panic selling and weak hands clearing out. The market may need a more thorough clearing to initiate a healthier rebound.
