first_img The Wall Street Journal: Doomsters Long-Term Impact on Anthropic

The Wall Street Journal reported that a small group of artificial intelligence researchers is discussing how to avoid catastrophic artificial intelligence risks in a co-working space named Constellation in Berkeley, California. Sources close to the space indicated that employees from Anthropic also have office space there. The report noted that Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned this month, bringing public attention in the U.S. to the notion that "uncontrolled AI development could end humanity."The report stated that individuals in the relevant AI safety circles have been concerned about this issue for over a decade. They have honed their arguments in shared houses in the Bay Area and exchanged predictions at conferences in Berkeley and the Bahamas, discussing ideas such as purchasing remote islands, stockpiling iodine tablets, or relocating to desert electromagnetic shielding bunkers. A cocktail named "Death With Dignity" appeared on the drink menu at an event in 2022, referencing an article that suggested humanity is doomed to fail. The Wall Street Journal stated that these so-called doomsayers are among the earliest employees of OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which were founded on the principle of preventing AI dangers. They continue to exert influence, with some personnel and project funding coming from networks associated with effective altruism, including the former CEO of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried; the report noted he is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence.

first_img Thomson Reuters launched its self-developed AI model Thomson-1, based on Alibaba's open-source Qwen

According to Business Insider, Thomson Reuters launched its first self-developed AI model, Thomson-1, on Monday. This model is based on Snowdon and constructed through "re-alignment" of Alibaba's open-source Qwen model. Open-source means anyone can download and modify the model for free. Thomson-1 will take over some tasks previously handled by Anthropic's Claude, but it is not intended to completely replace collaboration with Anthropic and other labs, initially focusing on the company's areas of expertise, starting with document review. This move aims to address the high AI costs brought by models like Claude and OpenAI Codex, and reflects the use of cheaper Chinese open-source AI. CTO Joel Hron stated that the main reason is to better leverage Thomson Reuters' own expertise and control costs. The company expanded its collaboration with Anthropic in May this year for the AI legal assistant CoCounsel, which still primarily relies on Claude. Hron said, "Our main goal is to gradually make Thomson the model that drives more and more capabilities for CoCounsel."Thomson Reuters, in collaboration with a team from Imperial College London, spent months transforming Qwen to build Snowdon and ensured it is "ethically and politically bias-processed and safe to use." Hron pointed out that having a proprietary model allows for development based on its own intellectual property rather than continuously paying external AI companies, comparing it to renting versus buying a house: renting provides shelter but does not accumulate long-term equity.

Ningbo Customs Anti-Smuggling Bureau has cracked a series of smuggling cases involving virtual currency mining machines, seizing over 400 "mining machines."

According to Zhejiang Daily, recently, the Ningbo Customs Anti-Smuggling Bureau successfully dismantled multiple criminal gangs smuggling virtual currency "mining machines" through in-depth operations and meticulous investigations, effectively cutting off an illegal industrial chain.Previously, during a routine inspection of a batch of imported express shipments declared as "industrial blockers," Ningbo Customs discovered that the actual goods did not match the declaration and were, in fact, virtual currency "mining machines." Customs officers quickly transferred this lead to the anti-smuggling department. After receiving the report, the Ningbo Customs Anti-Smuggling Bureau immediately assembled a task force by drawing on elite personnel, and through data analysis and clue investigation, gradually clarified the organizational structure and operational model of the criminal network. When the timing was right, they decisively struck, simultaneously conducting net-seizing operations in Dongguan, Shenzhen, and other locations, successfully dismantling multiple smuggling gangs of mining machines.Upon investigation, it was confirmed that this series of cases seized over 400 illegal entry mining machines of brands such as Ant L9 and Ice River KS3. The investigation revealed that the smuggling gang led by Liao, in order to make illegal profits, procured "mining machines" from overseas suppliers, disassembled the whole machines, and misreported the product names to smuggle them into the country through international express channels from ports in Ningbo, Guangzhou, and other places. After the goods entered the country, the gang reassembled them, either selling them directly domestically or transporting them to hidden "mining sites" in Xinjiang, Hunan, and other places to engage in illegal virtual currency "mining" activities. At the same time, they utilized virtual currencies like USDT for cross-border payment settlements to evade financial supervision.

The Financial Supervisory Service of South Korea, the Customs Service, and credit card companies join forces to combat cryptocurrency exchange and illegal overseas withdrawals

According to New Daily, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) of South Korea, the Customs Service, the Credit Finance Association, and nine credit card companies in the country signed the "Public-Private Cooperation Agreement to Block Transnational Criminal Funding" on the same day. The plan aims to cut off the funding chain for telephone fraud and virtual asset crimes at the source by analyzing overseas credit card usage details and entry and exit records. In the past, due to information gaps between agencies, the Customs Service had entry and exit data but could not monitor abnormal overseas consumption in real-time, while credit card companies had payment data but did not have access to cardholders' customs clearance dynamics. Under the new mechanism, the Customs Service will provide credit card companies with information on high-risk transaction trends, while the Financial Supervisory Service will establish guidelines authorizing credit card companies to take effective measures such as interrupting transactions when abnormalities are detected.Lee Chan-jin, the head of the Financial Supervisory Service of South Korea, stated that this move signifies that South Korea has established a normalized monitoring system to block the outflow of criminal proceeds at the source. The system will focus on precisely targeting currency exchange behaviors that involve cash withdrawals at overseas ATMs using overseas credit cards and laundering through cryptocurrencies.
