Zhao Changpeng calls for the cryptocurrency industry to establish a security alliance to share defense experiences

Binance founder Zhao Changpeng responded for the first time to the incident of approximately $6.3 billion being stolen from Binance during an interview with Talking Tokens, stating that all hacking attacks are preventable and that a long period without security incidents can lead to complacency in enterprises. He pointed out that the frequency of hacking attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges has risen from about once a month to almost once a week, with AI accelerating the development of attack capabilities, while the industry's defensive capabilities have not kept pace. He called for the cryptocurrency industry to form a security alliance to share best security practices, conduct cross-audits, and achieve rapid coordination in freezing stolen funds, expressing hope to promote the establishment of this alliance.Regarding government cooperation, Zhao Changpeng stated that there has been no communication with Trump or Washington regarding this incident, but he hopes to receive assistance from the U.S. government. He also mentioned that when it comes to communication with North Korea, perhaps only the U.S. and China have the necessary conditions. Speaking about market reactions,Zhao Changpeng noted that on the day Binance was attacked, the decline in the cryptocurrency market was less than that of tech stocks, a situation that is almost unheard of. He believes this is due to Binance's prompt confirmation of user fund security and its ability to provide full compensation. He also revealed that less than 10% of the stolen funds flowed to other centralized exchanges; recently, some hardware wallets have also been attacked, and some users have returned their funds to Binance after comparing the security situations of different platforms. Binance switched from net outflow to net inflow within less than 24 hours based on hourly statistics.Regarding the future of the industry, Zhao Changpeng believes that AI will enhance the security of the cryptocurrency industry and software systems in the medium to long term, and may even detect vulnerabilities in blockchain software before quantum computing can crack the existing encryption systems. At the same time, AI will drive trading speeds far beyond current levels, and blockchain may become the only financial technology capable of supporting such trading speeds. He also reminded retail investors to strengthen the use of asset protection tools and to continuously pay attention to industry security dynamics.

Zhao Changpeng: It is expected that the frequency of hacker attacks will further increase, and AI technology must be utilized more to strengthen defenses

Binance founder Zhao Changpeng stated in an interview, "The theft incident seems to never happen until it actually does, right? But often just before something happens, you overlook some details. Therefore, as long as you invest enough energy and attention, every security incident can actually be avoided. I believe we can learn a lot from this.Without sufficient technological application and market adoption, the tech sector may not receive enough investment. Therefore, market demand also needs to grow in sync, and the two must promote each other. We cannot wait until technology reaches 100% maturity to take action, because technology can never achieve absolute maturity; it is always in a process of continuous improvement. The development speed of AI technology is very fast, but it also brings many problems, such as security issues. In the past, we might see a hacking incident every month or so, but now it could happen every week. Just yesterday, four cryptocurrency trading platforms experienced different hacking attacks.I expect that the frequency and speed of hacking attacks will further increase in the future, as attackers are also leveraging AI more. At the same time, we must also utilize AI technology more to strengthen our defenses. To combat a powerful opponent, sometimes you must possess comparable capabilities. Therefore, we actually need to have AI technological capabilities to respond to these threats. So, there is no so-called perfect timing to wait until technology is fully mature and all security issues are resolved before taking action. Technology and security capabilities are always evolving."

first_img The U.S. Department of Defense has been reported to request OpenAI to provide a special version of AI with the "lowest rejection rate" for military commands

Documents obtained by The Intercept through a lawsuit under the Freedom of Information Act show that the U.S. Department of Defense once requested OpenAI to provide a version of artificial intelligence specifically tailored for the military, with a "very low refusal rate" for commands. This statement appeared in the updated contract for the 2025 prototype agreement "P00003," which is a two-year agreement worth up to $200 million, covering logistics, intelligence decision-making, and operational uses. OpenAI, Google, xAI, and Anthropic all agreed to develop such militarized prototypes in 2025.OpenAI spokesperson Nate Evans stated that the company never agreed to contract terms that included a "very low refusal rate," and the relevant documents were early drafts from the Department of Defense, with the final executed contract not containing that statement. Department of Defense spokesperson Jacob Bliss also indicated that the phrase did not appear in any current contracts. The Intercept pointed out that the documents obtained were not marked as drafts; a Department of Justice lawyer representing the Pentagon once confirmed that the document was a signed executed version, but later requested to disregard that confirmation and stated that further investigation was needed. The latest contract signed on February 27 allows OpenAI services to be deployed on military classified networks, with similar delivery terms completely redacted. OpenAI stated that it has drawn a red line regarding autonomous killing and surveillance of Americans, but the contract text allows the government to determine any use as legal.
