The People's Bank of China reiterated the regulatory requirements for virtual currencies, prohibiting related businesses and pegged stablecoins to the renminbi

The People's Bank of China today reiterated in its financial education campaign that virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether do not have legal tender status and cannot be used for currency circulation; conducting virtual currency-related businesses within the country is considered illegal financial activity and is strictly prohibited. The People's Bank of China stated that without the consent of relevant authorities, domestic entities and their controlled overseas entities are not allowed to issue virtual currencies abroad, and no units or individuals, whether domestic or foreign, are permitted to issue stablecoins pegged to the Renminbi abroad. The People's Bank reminds the public not to participate in virtual currency issuance, trading, investment, or mining activities, to be wary of high-yield investment scams, and to avoid renting out bank cards, payment accounts, or participating in virtual currencies. In addition, the People's Bank advises caution against virtual currency investment products and trading platforms that claim "guaranteed profits" or "high interest"; not to participate in virtual currency issuance, trading, investment, or "mining" activities; not to join communities promoting virtual currency activities, not to click on links containing overseas virtual currency trading platforms, or download related apps; not to lend or rent out bank cards or payment accounts, not to buy or sell virtual currencies "on behalf of others" as instructed, and not to act as "drivers," "currency dealers," or "U merchants"; and to report any clues related to virtual currency business activities to the relevant regulatory authorities in a timely manner.

first_img Former BlackRock executive Joseph Chalom: Over 95% of stablecoins are pegged to the US dollar, and Asian regulators should not allow payment rails to be dominated by the dollar

ChainCatcher reported live that HashKey Capital CEO Deng Chao and Sharplink CEO Joseph Chalom jointly attended the 2026 Hong Kong Web3 Carnival roundtable discussion, exploring "From Finance to Strategy: How Public Companies Are Positioning Themselves Based on Digital Assets."Chalom, who worked at BlackRock for 20 years, began leading BlackRock's blockchain and digital assets team six years ago, during which he launched Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, raising about $100 billion at its peak. He stated that the choice to establish a digital asset treasury with Ethereum rather than Bitcoin is because Ethereum is a "native productive asset," which can earn nearly 3% returns through staking, while Bitcoin can only be held in anticipation of appreciation. Sharplink has been listed on Nasdaq and has raised billions of dollars to purchase Ethereum since launching its digital asset treasury strategy last June, currently holding approximately 770,000 ETH and earning about 17,000 ETH and over $35 million in rewards for investors through staking.Regarding industry trends, he pointed out that Ethereum is dominating three major use cases: stablecoins (over 60% occur on Ethereum), asset tokenization, and decentralized finance. He specifically warned that currently over 95% of stablecoins are denominated in US dollars, and if stablecoins are to become the payment rail for trillions of transactions in the AI economy, Asian regulators should not allow them to be dominated by the US dollar and US Treasury bonds, as this will trigger a geopolitical competition to advance local stablecoin legislation.Discussing market cycles, he noted that the crypto market has experienced significant pullbacks since last October, with short-term prices being unpredictable, but in the long term, the current risk-reward ratio is at its best level in a long time. He emphasized that digital asset treasuries are not passive investments; Ethereum is a high-volatility asset, and volatility is a characteristic of capital appreciation rather than a defect.

Saga paused its on-chain operations after losing $7 million in an attack, and the stablecoin depegged to $0.75

Layer-1 blockchain protocol Saga has urgently paused its Ethereum-compatible Saga EVM chainlet after experiencing an attack that resulted in a loss of approximately $7 million. The attack led to unauthorized funds being cross-chain transferred and exchanged for ETH, causing its dollar-pegged stablecoin, Saga Dollar, to de-peg, with the price dropping to as low as $0.75. The Saga team stated that the chain was paused at block height 6,593,800.Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident involved a series of contract deployments, cross-chain operations, and liquidity withdrawals, but there was no consensus failure, validator compromise, or private key leakage; the overall structure of the Saga mainnet remains secure. The impact was not limited to Saga Dollar; its stablecoins Colt and Mustang were also affected. The team has identified the addresses involved in the attack and is working with exchanges and cross-chain bridges to blacklist these addresses. The chain will remain paused until a complete security audit and post-mortem analysis are published.On-chain data shows that Saga's TVL plummeted from approximately $37 million to $16 million within 24 hours, a decrease of about 55%. Some security researchers speculate that the attack may be related to the "infinite minting" of stablecoins using cross-chain mechanisms, while others believe that the possibility of private key leakage cannot be ruled out, but the officials have not yet confirmed the specific attack vector.
