first_img The European Central Bank plans to expand the ban on stablecoin yields to cover lending and staking

According to CoinDesk, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the central banks of EU member states wish to prohibit crypto platforms from providing indirect yields on stablecoins through lending, staking, and other products. The European System of Central Banks (ESCB) stated in response to the European Commission's consultation on the review of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) that electronic money should be used for payments rather than savings, continuing to support the prohibition of crypto asset service providers (CASP) from paying rewards for stablecoins, and that the ban should not be limited to services already regulated by MiCA but should also cover unregulated activities such as crypto lending, borrowing, and staking.Central banks believe that allowing indirect yields could blur the lines between electronic money and bank deposits, distorting the fair competitive environment of the EU financial system. The ESCB stated that maintaining and, when necessary, strengthening this ban, while covering both direct and indirect forms of rewards, should be a clear legislative priority. This position also echoes the controversy in the U.S. surrounding the Clarity Act, where eight U.S. banking groups urged senators to tighten the bill's restrictions on stablecoin rewards, which ultimately failed in a procedural vote of 49 to 50.In addition, central banks also proposed to eliminate the MiCA requirement for stablecoin issuers to hold part of their reserves in the form of bank deposits, replacing it with liquidity rules based on the liquidity of reserve assets. Currently, stablecoin issuers must keep at least 30% of their reserves in credit institutions, and this percentage rises to 60% for those classified as significant stablecoins. The ESCB suggested that significant stablecoins must allocate at least 40% of their reserves to assets maturing within one day and 60% to assets maturing within five working days, while the corresponding thresholds for non-significant stablecoins are 20% and 30%.

first_img Bitmine staked over 5 million ETH, expecting an annual staking income of 334 million USD

Cryptocurrency asset company Bitmine Immersion Technologies announced last week that it has increased its holdings by 27,180 ETH, bringing its total ETH holdings to over 5.95 million, valued at approximately $1.54 billion, accounting for about 4.9% of the circulating supply of Ethereum. Including cash and other cryptocurrency assets, the company's total holdings amount to approximately $15.8 billion.Bitmine stated that currently over 5.06 million ETH are staked, and based on the current yield, it is expected to generate approximately $334 million in staking income annually, with about 85% of its ETH holdings used for staking. In comparison, the staking ratio for Grayscale Ethereum Staked ETF (ETHE) is 84.6%. Since BTC does not generate native staking income, this strategy has advantages over treasury companies holding Bitcoin. On Monday, Bitmine's stock price remained flat, around $25, having risen nearly 38% over the past month.Meanwhile, Michael Saylor's Strategy has not purchased Bitcoin for the second consecutive week, instead opting to repurchase its STRC preferred shares. Between September 8 and 13, Strategy spent $139.3 million to repurchase approximately 1.42 million shares of STRC, following a previous week where it repurchased $176.3 million worth of STRC. As of September 13, Strategy's Bitcoin holdings remained unchanged at 845,050 coins.

first_img Ethereum developers propose upgrading the staking contract to defend against quantum attacks

According to CoinDesk, Ethereum researchers have proposed rebuilding the validator deposit contract to support a new cryptographic system and ultimately stop accepting deposits protected by the existing BLS signatures. This proposal targets the deposit contract, aiming to add a switch that prevents the network from accepting the currently relied-upon signature format.Currently, the contract only accepts BLS keys because their exact size is hardcoded, while the new draft allows for different key sizes, with each deposit tagged by the cryptographic system used, where BLS receives a tag of zero, reserving space for future schemes. If the proposal is approved, it will initially operate with BLS deposits, while other schemes can be registered simultaneously. Future decisions may permanently disable new BLS deposits, at which point validators who have staked using BLS keys will not disappear, but new validators will not be able to join using this method. Ethereum will ultimately need to change separately to inform validators how to check new signatures. This is part of the migration for validators, while another part is already in progress—EIP-8141 framework transaction proposals will allow regular Ethereum accounts to change the cryptographic method for approving transactions without changing their address. The urgency stems from research released in March by Google's Quantum AI research department, which outlined five quantum attack paths against Ethereum, putting over $100 billion in assets at potential risk. The Ethereum Foundation is advancing core protocol changes with a target around 2029. Currently, the amount of ETH staked in Ethereum is approximately 42.4 million, valued at about $10.4 billion.
