Goldman Sachs: Korean retail investors are flowing funds into cryptocurrency, and KOSPI's upward movement relies more on foreign investment

Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research Department's South Korea stock analyst Chris Cha stated in a report on September 23 that KOSPI has the conditions for a short-term tactical breakout, but the continuous flow of liquidity from South Korean retail investors into the cryptocurrency market will make the index's subsequent upward movement more reliant on foreign capital and local institutions reconfiguring. The report noted that concerns about the Federal Reserve's interest rates have been partially digested by the market, and risk appetite has shifted towards proxy AI themes. The report pointed out that South Korean memory chips provide fundamental support, with fourth-quarter DRAM contract prices expected to grow double digits quarter-on-quarter, and the ramp-up of HBM4 capacity will continue to limit the supply of standard server DRAM. Samsung Electronics' large shareholder returns, continuous buying by institutions, and foreign capital turning into net buying may drive KOSPI towards the resistance zone of 7000 to 7200 points. The report also indicated that the capacity of local South Korean retail investors to absorb has weakened. After Bitcoin returned to $85,000, cryptocurrency trading in South Korea has heated up. According to DefiLlama data cited in the report, Upbit's single-day spot trading volume on June 13 was approximately $770 million, which rose to $1.817 billion on September 22, an increase of about 136%. Based on the total trading volume of $3.27 billion on that day across South Korea's five major trading platforms, Upbit alone accounted for over half. Goldman Sachs believes this will make KOSPI more reliant on foreign and institutional buying in the future, and October is a critical window to test whether foreign capital will continue to increase its investment in South Korean semiconductor and AI assets.

The purpose of this subsidiary is to hold and operate the company's cryptocurrency mining business, mining machines, and related on-chain assets as a completely independent business entity, in order to further optimize the overall asset structure of the parent company and align with the implementation of the AI computing power center strategy.Reap plans to launch multi-national local currency stablecoins to build a 24/7 on-chain foreign exchange trading network: The multinational payment technology platform Reap, which has received strategic support from Kraken's parent company Payward and is a core partner of Visa, announced plans to successively launch local currency stablecoins in multiple countries and regions to achieve 24/7 on-chain foreign exchange settlements. The People's Bank of China reiterated the regulatory requirements for virtual currencies, prohibiting related businesses and pegged stablecoins to the renminbi

The People's Bank of China today reiterated in its financial education campaign that virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether do not have legal tender status and cannot be used for currency circulation; conducting virtual currency-related businesses within the country is considered illegal financial activity and is strictly prohibited. The People's Bank of China stated that without the consent of relevant authorities, domestic entities and their controlled overseas entities are not allowed to issue virtual currencies abroad, and no units or individuals, whether domestic or foreign, are permitted to issue stablecoins pegged to the Renminbi abroad. The People's Bank reminds the public not to participate in virtual currency issuance, trading, investment, or mining activities, to be wary of high-yield investment scams, and to avoid renting out bank cards, payment accounts, or participating in virtual currencies. In addition, the People's Bank advises caution against virtual currency investment products and trading platforms that claim "guaranteed profits" or "high interest"; not to participate in virtual currency issuance, trading, investment, or "mining" activities; not to join communities promoting virtual currency activities, not to click on links containing overseas virtual currency trading platforms, or download related apps; not to lend or rent out bank cards or payment accounts, not to buy or sell virtual currencies "on behalf of others" as instructed, and not to act as "drivers," "currency dealers," or "U merchants"; and to report any clues related to virtual currency business activities to the relevant regulatory authorities in a timely manner.

According to CoinDesk, Daren Guo, founder of Reap, a Hong Kong fintech platform and Visa partner, stated that Reap plans to add a Mexican peso stablecoin to its card, cross-border payment, and fund management products, and is exploring stablecoins for the Hong Kong dollar, euro, Korean won, and Japanese yen to support around-the-clock on-chain foreign exchange settlements and reduce cross-border costs.Reap is a major issuing member of Visa in Hong Kong and Mexico (VPIM), owned by Kraken's parent company Payward, and can issue cards on its own BIN, claiming to support partners in over 100 markets. Guo noted that while public blockchains continue to operate, global foreign exchange still relies on bank operating hours, correspondent banks, and settlements that can take several days. Transfer fees for some currency corridors in emerging and cross-border markets can reach 5% to 7%, while nearly 99% of current stablecoin payments are denominated in US dollars. The company is integrating stablecoin settlements into a broader product system that includes cards, cross-border payments, fund management, and compliance risk control. Reap stated that in the first half of 2026, card and payment volumes grew by 33% year-on-year, with revenue and transaction volume expected to double in 2025. Stephen Karpin, President of Visa Asia Pacific, stated that blockchain settlement should not be viewed as a replacement for traditional payment systems, but rather as a complementary relationship, with opportunities to reduce friction and maintain interoperability with the broader financial system.

first_img The Bank of Korea launches a 24-hour won settlement pilot program aimed at foreign investors

The Bank of Korea (BOK) has launched the first 24-hour Korean won settlement network pilot, aimed at allowing foreign investors to settle won transactions outside of normal banking hours in South Korea. The central bank announced on Monday that its international wire transfer network has begun trial operations with four domestic banks: KB Kookmin Bank, Woori Bank, Hana Bank, and Shinhan Bank. Full operations are expected to start in January 2027, at which point participation will expand to other institutions and foreign banks. The network operates 24 hours a day on weekdays, excluding weekends and public holidays. Foreign investors can settle won transactions during their domestic business hours by registering a Foreign Institution (RFI-K) account for won services, without the need to open an account directly with a South Korean financial institution. The Bank of Korea stated that the network is expected to enhance the international status of the won by improving foreign investors' access to won settlement infrastructure. In addition, the Bank of Korea is also experimenting with tokenized settlement infrastructure through the Agorá project led by the Bank for International Settlements, which completed a cross-border payment trial using tokenized central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits, including the won, in July. The Bank of Korea is simultaneously advancing the Hangang project, a blockchain-based pilot that utilizes wholesale central bank digital currency to settle tokenized commercial bank deposits.

first_img The head of Grayscale Research reiterated that Bitcoin at $58,000 is the bottom, signaling a green light to clients

According to The Block, Grayscale's research director Zach Pandl stated that the approximately $58,000 low reached around June 30 remains his assessment of the bottom of the current bear market phase, and Grayscale is currently advising clients to allocate Bitcoin.Pandl mentioned in an interview with The Block during the Avalanche summit in New York that they have maintained the view that $58,000 is the bottom of this bear market phase for the past few months. This assessment echoes the comments made by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who stated on September 10 that Bitcoin has bottomed out in the current cycle and expects a sustained upward trend for the next two years.Pandl stated that Grayscale uses a three-part framework to assess whether clients should allocate Bitcoin, including long-term structural trends, market cycle phases, and macro context. He believes that all three conditions are currently met, thus giving clients the "green light" to allocate Bitcoin. As of Thursday morning, Bitcoin was above $76,000, up 0.8% in 24 hours, but still down about 39% from its historical high of approximately $126,000.Pandl also compared Bitcoin with Zcash, noting that Grayscale has offered investment products for Zcash for about nine years. He believes that Zcash occupies an "underutilized and unexplored design space," rather than directly competing with Bitcoin, and pointed out that as artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, privacy issues are receiving more attention, with Zcash providing investors a way to express their views on personal and financial privacy.
