Seamless Cross-Border Consumption: Foreign Tourists Can Scan to Pay in Korea with Base Wallet USDC

For a long time, cross-border tourists have faced numerous pain points when spending abroad, including high foreign currency exchange fees, delays in credit card foreign exchange settlements, and the cumbersome process of cash exchange.

To address this issue, South Korea's top card organization BC Card has partnered with global cryptocurrency exchange giant Coinbase and Web3 asset management company Wavebridge to create a brand new cross-border settlement solution. In the design of this proof of concept (PoC) project, foreign tourists entering South Korea do not need to exchange their digital assets for Korean Won (KRW) in advance; they can simply use the Base wallet supported by Coinbase to scan and complete transactions directly at BC QR affiliated merchants located throughout South Korea.

Three-Month Verification: Connecting the Full Chain from Stablecoin to KRW Settlement and Refund

As a hardcore test aimed at real commercial scenarios, this proof of concept project has completed the entire process of compliance and technical penetration in approximately three months since its launch in April this year.

The project not only successfully verified the complete closed-loop process of foreign currency stablecoin (USDC) from on-chain initiation of deductions, real-time exchange rate calculations, to automatic settlement in KRW to local South Korean merchants, but also overcame a major challenge in the field of cryptocurrency payments—successfully achieving "settlement cancellation" and "merchant refund" functions in a decentralized blockchain environment. This means that the system possesses financial-grade customer service and adjustment processing capabilities that can fully compete with traditional card organizations like Visa or MasterCard.

Traditional Card Organizations "Proactively Embrace": Stablecoins Reshape the Global Retail Payment Landscape

The core highlight of this collaboration lies in the shift of traditional card organizations from "passive defense" to "active integration."

As one of the most widely covered card settlement networks in South Korea, BC Card has an extremely large merchant interface. Through collaboration with Coinbase and Wavebridge, BC Card has directly integrated decentralized wallets (Base Wallet) and stablecoins (USDC) into existing card organization hardware POS and QR terminals, thereby eliminating the enormous costs of updating and upgrading hardware for millions of offline merchants, significantly lowering the penetration threshold of Web3 payments in the real economy.

The "De-Mediation" Evolution of Cross-Border Fiat Currency Settlement

Based on the latest breakthroughs in the Asian market in mid-August, the application of stablecoins at the retail end is no longer limited to the PPT conceptual stage. The successful proof of concept between South Korea's BC Card and Coinbase demonstrates the potential of stablecoins as a "borderless universal settlement medium" to replace traditional foreign exchange and cross-border settlement networks. As more traditional card organizations introduce Web3 wallets as compliant payment terminals, global cross-border consumption settlement in the second half of 2026 will accelerate into a rapid, seamless new era of "on-chain payments, local settlements."
