Netflix released a trailer for a series about FTX, focusing on SBF and Caroline Ellison

2026-10-09 02:26:02

Netflix released a trailer for an eight-episode series that tells the story of the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, focusing on former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and his colleague and girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, head of FTX's sister company Alameda Research. The series will premiere on November 19, with Anthony Boyle portraying Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner portraying Ellison.

The trailer emphasizes that "going all in on math is the optimal strategy," seemingly pointing to FTX's use of user funds for high-risk investments. Ellison, played by Garner, says in the trailer, "Lying isn't bad for a good cause," echoing Ellison's testimony during the 2023 trial, where she stated that Bankman-Fried believed the rules against lying and stealing did not necessarily apply to effective altruism, a philosophy that advocates doing good whenever possible, including through accumulating wealth to donate to charitable causes.

After the collapse and bankruptcy of FTX, Bankman-Fried, Ellison, and related individuals were indicted in December 2022. Ellison pleaded guilty and cooperated with prosecutors to testify, while Bankman-Fried chose to stand trial, was convicted on seven counts of fraud, and sentenced to 25 years in prison. As of October, he remains incarcerated in federal prison and has requested a pardon from President Trump and for the Supreme Court to overturn his conviction; Ellison was released in January.
