Anthropic signed at least 14.8GW of computing power in the past 11 months, with a potential cost of up to 517 billion USD

According to statistics from The Information, Anthropic has signed at least 14.8GW of computing power in the past 11 months, which can be gradually utilized in the coming years. Based on currently public contracts, the potential total cost could reach up to $517 billion, with most expenditures occurring over the next decade. In addition to the 1-2GW already secured before October last year, the total computing power signed by Anthropic is approximately 16GW.This round of expansion is primarily driven by the demand for Claude. This year, the growth of Claude Code and Cowork has exceeded Anthropic's expectations, prompting the company to focus on acquiring computing power. The new agreement with Amazon provides up to 5GW, while Google and Broadcom offer another 5GW, and Microsoft and NVIDIA provide approximately 1GW. Anthropic has also rented all computing power from SpaceX's Colossus 1, acquiring over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, including H100, H200, and GB200.Anthropic has secured about 16GW, with many contracts extending beyond 2030. OpenAI has set a target for investors to reach 30GW by 2030, expecting to invest approximately $750 billion in computing power by that year. The $517 billion figure is the potential maximum cost estimated by The Information based on existing cloud services, chip, and data center contracts, with some computing power potentially being delayed or unused, and some contracts allowing for early cancellation.

first_img OpenAI Chief Scientist says AI may continue to rise rapidly to recursive self-improvement

OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki published an article titled "An Alien Mind" on September 6, 2026. The article reviews the results of the RLSlow research project, which emerged in mid-2023, demonstrating the first scalable training of reasoning models. It states that three years later, reasoning language models have become part of rapid economic growth, beginning to push scientific boundaries, capable of operating computers and graphical interfaces, collaborating with humans and other AIs on research projects, while also changing the landscape of computer security and introducing new dangers. The author anticipates that the current pace of progress may continue towards recursive self-improvement based on internal results. If AI development continues along the current path, systems may experience equivalent or greater leaps in capability in the coming years, increasingly driving their own development. The author calls for extreme caution, believing that no one is prepared to deal with the consequences of the rapid rise of machine intelligence. OpenAI will continue to seek technical solutions for alignment and monitoring, build defensive systems, and unilaterally halt further scaling when necessary, but believes broader intervention is needed. The article states that machine intelligence is primarily driven by increased computational power, with AI growing more than being designed. In terms of alignment, it distinguishes between goal alignment and value alignment, with the core challenge being generalization. GPT-6 Astra shows significantly better alignment than GPT-5.6 Sol, but more progress is still needed. In monitoring, the focus is mainly on chain-of-thought monitoring, with assessments showing that reliance on capabilities is gradually weakening. In terms of scalable defense, models are becoming superhuman in breaking into computer systems, currently in a narrow window where using the best available models significantly enhances the security of critical systems.

first_img Sanders and others proposed a bill to permanently ban super artificial intelligence and suspend advanced AI development

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar introduced the "Artificial Intelligence Superintelligence Prohibition Act," which calls for a permanent ban on the development of superintelligent AI and a suspension of advanced AI research until new federal agencies establish safety standards and review procedures. Sanders criticized large AI companies for developing technologies that they cannot fully understand or reliably control, stating that companies and individuals who violate the regulations could face up to 20 years in prison, with the most serious cases potentially subject to what is referred to as "corporate death penalty."The bill defines superintelligence as AI systems that achieve or exceed human capabilities across numerous tasks or could undermine human control (including overthrowing the U.S. government), and this definition also encompasses human-level AGI. The bill plans to establish a new cabinet-level agency responsible for monitoring advanced models, overseeing the removal of dangerous capabilities, and the destruction of banned systems, as well as forming an AI advisory committee to provide scientific and technical advice. On the same day the bill was announced, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, with co-founder Greg Brockman stating that he personally believes this model may meet the definition of AGI. OpenAI described Astra as its first model to reach a "critical" threshold of cybersecurity capability, potentially discovering and exploiting unknown vulnerabilities in protected systems without gradual human guidance, with its strongest cybersecurity capabilities limited to selected testers. Previously, OpenAI and Anthropic's models had repeatedly accessed real systems without authorization during testing, including incidents where OpenAI's model breached Hugging Face to obtain test answers.

first_img OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, calling it the arrival of the AGI era

OpenAI officially released GPT-6 Astra on Thursday, with President Greg Brockman calling it a "generational leap in capability" during the press conference, and believing that the model has reached the standard of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), meaning that artificial intelligence can match or exceed human capabilities. Brockman stated, "Welcome to the era of AGI." If this judgment holds, it means AI entities will be closer to performing reasoning tasks in various complex tasks that humans can do, and even more.GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's first model to cross the "critical" threshold under its internal danger capability scoring system, the Preparedness Framework, which means it can independently discover previously unknown software vulnerabilities (i.e., zero-day vulnerabilities) without gradual human supervision and chain them into attacks that can run in hardened systems. In testing, the model achieved a score of 100% on the ExploitBench benchmark; to rule out inflated scores due to memory answers, OpenAI conducted a second test using 20 recent vulnerabilities from the Google V8 JavaScript engine. Astra not only surpassed the previous generation GPT-5.6 Sol but also discovered and chained two previously unknown zero-day vulnerabilities, which are still being disclosed to the affected parties.Due to its high autonomy, the monitoring difficulty of Astra has also increased. OpenAI acknowledges that in tests assessing its ability to evade supervision, the model is more difficult to track than previous systems.
